I am new to the Fleet Foxes but I am quickly becoming a fan of this indi-rock band from Seattle. This is the first full length album from the band and from what I hear we should expect to hear more from them in the years to come. Today I will let Amazon reviewer E. A Solinas "ea_solinas" give us the low down.

The Fleet Foxes are a rock band that sounds like no other -- imagine a pastoral choir overwhelming a sweeping folk-rock band, in the middle of a sunlit forest in the spring.

That's about the sound of the Fleet Foxes' self-titled debut album -- it's a stream of lush, jangly folk pop, edged with a touch of baroque and country-rock. While their "Sun Giant" EP was an excellent introduction, it's nothing compared to the rough-edged grandeur of the full-length album, with its glorious instrumentation and vivid lyricism.

It is no secret that Miles Davis is my all-time favorite jazz musician. For that matter, he is one of my favorite artist period. So when I can find a good deal on Miles you will be sure to hear about it. Amazon is featuring "My Funny Valentine" this week for $4.95. Here is what Allmusic.com has to say:

Miles Davis' concert of February 12, 1964, was originally divided into two LPs, with all of the ballads put on My Funny Valentine. These five lengthy tracks (which include "All of You," "Stella by Starlight," "All Blues," "I Thought About You," and the title cut) put the emphasis on the lyricism of Davis, along with some strong statements from tenor saxophonist George Coleman and freer moments from the young rhythm section of pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams. This hour-long LP complements the up-tempo romps of Four & More. The original CD issue was as a double disc with extra material. Thankfully, Legacy issued this as a single disc in 2005 as it appeared on LP, keeping the integrity of the original release.

"My Favorite Things" by John Coltrane for $.99 at Amazon

Today's MP3 deal on Amazon is a real jazz gem, and even more so because it is only $.99!!! "My Favorite Things" by John Coltrane is a very elegant and sophisticated jazz album from 1960. For Coltrane this album lands somewhere between his Bop and Free Form jazz genres. This album is so beautiful and easy to listen to. The title track, "My Favorite Things," is a great version of a song most people will identify with. The peppy and skillful "Summertime" track is one that you will thoroughly enjoy as well. This is a must have for any jazz fan or anyone looking to deepen their personal jazz catalog. It is very hard to go wrong with this one. Enjoy!

"August & Everything After" by Counting Crows for $2.99 at Amazon

In the early to mid 90's Counting Crows were as hot as you could get. "August & Everything After" was there huge break-out hit album that gave us songs like "Mr. Jones" and "Round Here." These songs and many others are ingrained into our sub-conscience. There was certainly a time when I was sick of hearing these songs and Counting Crows in general. I am starting to think that enough time has past that hearing these again would be more of a pleasure than pain. These guys are still around and are cranking out some good music. So it may be a good time to go back and listen to some of the hits that made them famous.

"Stay Positive" is The Hold Steady's newest album that was released in July of 2008. The Hold Steady's latest incarnation does draw critics and fans to make comparisons to Led Zepplin. Amazon has a good deal today on "The Singles 86-98" by Depeche Mode. I haven't listened to Depeche Mode in a while and seeing this deal on Amazon made me a bit nostalgic. The years covered by this best of... album is in sync with when I was in high school and college. Hearing these songs again brings back some interesting feelings and sets a specific mood. I think now is a good time for a new generation to hear what Depeche Mode is all about. In my opinion 86-98 is right when they were at their best. $3.99 is a great price for so many hits. Enjoy!

From what I understand, Justin Vernon locked himself up for nearly 4 months in a Wisconsin cabin to write this album. The term "haunting" and "beautiful" are frequently used to describe this album which has gained much critical acclaim.

I have 4 children that range in age from 2 months to 7 years old and during movie night this summer we did, in fact, watch Disney Camp Rock. If you have ever seen any of the High School Musical TV movies than you know what this is all about and probably watched Camp Rock as well. This is the first of many feature articles that I plan to provide for 5DollarMusic.com! This feature was a bit of an undertaking and I hope you all find it useful and informative. I am a huge fan of Jazz music and often get asked by friends and family what are the top Jazz albums they should own. Jazz, like any music genre, is very subjective to personal taste. It is impossible to nail down a definitive list that all would agree on. So I hit the web and found a few good "Top 100" jazz album lists. I decided to use the AllAboutJazz.com "Jazz-L Top 100+ list" for this feature. Their list is the most representative of the type of list I would put together myself.

My goal was to take the list of 100 jazz albums and document where you get each one for around $5. To accomplish this I looked in 3 places for each album on the list: Amazon.com (MP3), eMusic.com (MP3), and Half.com (CDs/MP3). In most cases the list I have compiled will feature the best price I could find. In some cases I provide 2 options where the price was similar at different sites. There are some albums that don't have links because I could not find a price close enough to $5. These particular albums may be boxed sets are just hard-to-find titles. I will keep looking and update the list when I can.

There are a few other notes about this list I would like to make before we jump in. Half.com shows up the most on this list because used CDs still offer the best price for music ownership. I am still a fan of CDs because you can rip the music in DRM-Free MP3 format to your iTunes library, and you get to keep the physical disk! You do have to pay for shipping but the prices I feature are still very low even with shipping cost added. I also feature eMusic.com which is a subscription music service. I did a rough calculation of the per-album cost at eMusic.com and it came out to be about $3 per album with a basic subscription. The cool thing about eMusic.com is that you actually own the music even if you cancel your subscription. All of their tracks are DRM-Free MP3! Not bad at all and it is worth the money.
